World Diabetes Day 2012 Australia - Health News

.

Diabetes now affects nearly 350 million people worldwide and has become a global health problem.

On 14 November, as every year, will be the World Diabetes Day.
This date refers to the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, played a crucial role in the discovery of insulin in 1922.

This day, organized in more than 160 countries at the initiative of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and supported by the world Organization of the health (who), aims to raise awareness about this disease and the means of prevention available.

Since 2009 and for 5 years, the theme of the day is 'education and Prevention of diabetes': understand it and to regain control.

For the year 2012, the campaign revolves specifically around the importance of education, commitment, accountability of the youth and the general public to reduce the impact of diabetes in the world. The slogan of the campaign is "Diabetes: protecting our future" with 3 key messages:

Access to education for all, whether for health professionals or people with diabetes, with a focus on the self-management of diabetes for prevention and care.

The way we live puts our lives in danger. Nutrition, physical activity and weight affect the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

People with diabetes are facing stigma and discrimination, preventing them from playing an active role in society, even though they should be at the centre of the responses to the problem of diabetes. It is the awareness that will lead out of misconceptions.
